The legend of the Incarnation of Shri Vishnumaya Chathan Swami.
The purpose of birth of Bhagwan Shri Vishnumaya Chathan Swami was to slay Demon Bhringasura. The cruel and strong Bhringasura performed tough penance and obtained boons from Lord Brahma. He considered himself unbeatable in strength and grew insolent. He obtained the boon that if at all he should be slain, it should be by someone born of the essence of Lord Shiva and nursed by a virgin of Chandala kulam , a boy of seven years. He was satisfied that no one in the world could defeat him, he shall have two lives placed at the two sides of his chest.
In addition to the boon demanded by Bhringasura, Lord Brahama gave him ten Brahmasthra mantras.
The Devas, the virtuous, Rishis, humans and all others were harassed and helpless by the antics of Bhringan. They finally sought solace with Shri Parameswara and explained their sorrows. The all powerfull Bhagwan told them that the end of Bhringasura is close, for which an Avatharam having ‘Mayashakthi’ would soon materialize. Saying this, the Lord pacified them and sent them back.
The lord of the world Bhagwan Shri Parameshwara went out for ‘Pallivetta’. He reached Kulikunnan Forest . In the river Kooliyar (Hugli river), the Malaya sundari (Beautiful tribal princes) Kulivagha was bathing. The Bhagwan was mesmerized by her beauty and uttered an oracle to wait till the pallivetta was over, when he would return. The terrified Kulivaga who was an ardent devotee of Godess Parvathy prayed with all her heart and soul to Godess Parvathi who appeared before her. Kulivaga explained what had transpired to her. Narada muni (Saint of heaven) appeared and explained that all that occurred was for the good of mankind and with the passage of time everything will be evident. So saying he bowed to the Godess and disappearded into the forests.
Shri Parvathy pacified Koolivaga and assumed the form of Malaya Sundari. The conjugation took place. The divine life was placed in the forest tuber within 3 3/4th Nazhika. Shri Parvathy extended her arms to give the tuber to Koolivaga when it transformed into a radiant baby. This is how Bhagwan Chaaathan swami took his Incarnation.
In her last birth, Koolivaga was an attendant named Manasvani in Kailasam. She was cursed for her misdeeds and sent to human life. That is the reason for the happenings of the whole episode of her discomfiture. Now the child who was entrusted to her was almighty. Nothing was impossible for him. The child shall be the savior of the world. Koolivaga was given the seal and signets of Kailasam before the Godess left them.
Bhagwan Shri Chaathan grew up in Kaanana forest under the tutelage of Koolivaga.
Once, a fierce buffalo came to the Koolikunnan forest. It caused a lot of destruction. The dwellers were unable to venture outside their homes because of the buffalo. Once it tried to attack Koolivaga. Shri Chaathan Swami along with his aide Karinkutti defeated and subdued the buffalo. The buffalo became the means of transport of Bhagwan. Bhagwan mounted the buffalo and reached his step mother. After this incident Bhagwan became the favourite of the dwellers of the forest. He mastered martial arts and magic from the elders. By the age of seven Bhagwan was a seasoned warrior who was all powerful.
The journey to Kailasam by Chathan Swami.
‘Narada Muni’ (Saint of Heaven) holding the Veena appeared on the banks of Kooli river as Bhagwan Chathan was mounted on the buffalo with the sound of ‘Ezhara’ blowing and as he was enjoying the sights and sounds of the forest.
The Muni said that Bhagwans’s Mother Parvathi Devi is eager to see her son and wished that he would go to Kailasam (Presence of Lord Siva & Devi Parvathi). The time for fulfillment of the reason for the incarnation of Bhagwan Chaathan had approached and the nuisance of Brighasura has become intolerable. It was time to end the Asuran’s life and establish lasting peace on the Earth. Saying so, the Muni disappeared.
Hearing this Bhagwan Chaathan Swami went to his step Mother Koolivaga and sought her permission and blessings for the journey. Within seconds he reached near Kailasam by air due to his magical powers, mounted on the buffalo.
Bhagwan knew that in this form he could not reach his Father’s side as Nandikeshan and the other Boothakanangal would not permit it. The Bhagwan assumed the form of Lord Mahavishnu, four hands with Shanku, Gadha, Chakra, Padma and the Vanamala. He dismounted at the entrance of the Kailasam.
The Lord Parameswaran was aware of a divine radiance passing through the sky on a Buffalo and transformed into the form of Mahavishnu and dismounting at the gates of Kailasam; yet the all knowing Lord remained silent. Nandikeshan welcomed Bhagwan. Bhagwan did Sanshtaanga Namaskaram to his father. Paramashivan blessed his son.
The Lord made Bhagwan sit on his lap and stroked his head. He announced that the Bhagwan who had assumed the form of Mahavishnu through Mayashakthi shall hence forth be known as Vishnumaya and blessed him. Bhagwan was taught mantras to be used for the welfare of the Universe by the Lord.
Advise by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
Lord Shiva advised his son about the perils of ‘Kaliyuga’ (Last & fourth yuga of Hindhu Mythology) and his duties in the age. In ‘Kaliyuga’ goodness will be scarce and evil will increase. Hence
all energy of the Lord will be invested in Bhagwan Chaathan in order to
save the world.
The ‘Boothas, Prethams and Pishajikals (Evil Forces) will torment the people who shall need protection. In the ‘Thretha yuga’(Second yuga of Hindhu Mythology) King Dasharatha of Surya vamsha begot a son Sri Rama who is the incarnation of Mahavishnu. The Lord said that his disciple Ravana shall grow arrogant with his powers.Arrogance destroys goodness. The insolent Ravana will harm his fellow
beings, to prevent which Sri Rama armed; you need to transform into Chaapa roopam (Form of bow) for destroy the evil Asura and save the Universe.
Similarly in ‘Dwapara yuga’ (Third Yuga of Hindhu Mythology) Mahavishnu shall assume the incarnation of Sri Krishna to destroy evil Forces. The Bhagwan shall always accompany Sri Kishna as the Sudarshana Chakram assisting in annihilating enemies.
The Lord said , “Son- seek the blessings of your Mother the embodiment of Shakthi. It is time to return to your duties.” So saying the Lord sent
Bhagwaan to Sri Parvathi.
Bhagwan Chaathan reached the presence of Sri Parvathi who welcomed him with
great affection. Bhagwaan offered saashtanga pranamam to the Godess. The
all powerful Mother caressed her child and made him sit on her lap and
advised him.
Godess said” I have single handedly killed many Asuras (The person who argent with evil forces). All that was possible with the support of the powers of your father. But today Bringhasuran has turned into a nuisance for all concerned. Hence it is time to destroy the evil and the purpose of your incarnation is close by. So, I give you all my powers “ So saying the Goddess advised bhagwaan about Yudhatantras (Key of war) and Mayatantras (key of miracles) in detail.
Later she gave him two ‘kuruvadi’ (A kind of weapon) to destroy Bringhasura, blessed bhagwan and bid him farewell.
The slaying of Brighasura.
A fierce battle ensued to destroy Bringhasuran. The Mayavidya of Mahamayavi (Miracle demon) Brighasuran failed in the presence of Bhagwan Sri Vishnumaya Chaathan Swami. Forced to take up arms Brighasuran had to admit defeat before the Bhagwan. Bhagwan stopped the Asuran’s last arrow with his thumb and the blood that oozed from the wound fell on the earth from which 400 Kuttichathans were born. The kuttichathans lined up to protect the bhagwan. Brighasuran realized that the only weapon left was the Brahmasthara. He uttered the mantra and sent the weapon towards Bhagwaan. The kuttichathans diffused 10 Brahmasthra else the world would have been destroyed. Unarmed and helpless the Asuran accepted defeat and fell at the feet of Bhagwan pleading for mercy and his life.
Bhagwan used the Two ‘Kuruvadi’ given by the Goddess and aiming it at the chest of Brighasura, let go of it in the left and right part of the chest. The two lives of Brighasura in his right and left chest were lost and thus the end of Bringhasuran materialized.
The 330 crore Gods showered flowers on the Bhagwaan. Trumpets of victory were sounded by the Maharishis. Yakshas, Kinnara and Gandharvas danced in joy. The whole world celebrated the death of Bringhasura.
Bhagwaan’s step Mother Koolivaga and Bhagwan Sri Vishnumaya Chaathan swami were blessed with the presence of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara accompanied by their consorts Devi Saraswathi, Laxmi and Parvathi. They blessed Bhagwan to take the form of the Chapa in Rama Avatharam and the Chakram in Sri Krishna Avatharam and in the Kaliyugam, the leader of Shaktheya Karmam so as to destroy evil and uphold virtue.
Bhagwaan Sri Vishnumaya Chaathan Swami exists as Dharma Shastha to protect the Universe in Kaliyuga with divine forces Lord Shiva, Shakthi and Vishnu.
